While our manager Joey Malone was in Dublin doing radio and tv interviews.
As assistant manager and coach I spent a full fortnight repeating this move over and over.
You may have to zoom in to see clearly.
As the diagram shows I placed 2 flag poles just inside the eighteen yard box, each in line
with the 2 goal posts, to help the players have a line of direction, when making their runs.
JG Johnny Glynn passes x the ball out to TK Tommy Keane ,then both NM Noel Mernagh
and JG Johnny Glynn make their runs in towards the 6 yard box they switch ,Johnny to the
back post and Noel to the front post, then Tommy hits a low hard cross pulled back from the keeper
Jarlath Keating. When the cross is on its way,Noel Mernagh has left the front post, to make the
Space for Johnny Glynn, who has to time his run to score a yard or so inside the near post, he times
his run perfectly and scores with the inside of his weaker right foot.We practised crosses from both sides with either Jimmy Nolan or Peter Carpenter from the left, if the cross went right through, then
Noel Mernagh, or another could score at the back post.
To coach a move like this that wins a magor trophy like F.A.I. CUP and against Shamrock rovers
who were going for their 25th win it would take them another 28 YEARS to make it 25wins!!!!
To coach such move ,Well it does nt get any better, and thats what big Jack Charlton said to me in the Eyre Square Centre in Galway City when some of the players and I paraded the cup, accompnied by
big Jack.
PS I met Tommy Keane in shop street Galway a couple of years before he passed, and I quote what
Tommy said to me “ I remembered what you said , hit the ball low and hard and pull it back from the
keeper. Rest in peace Tommy and thank you for all you gave us.
It was not until Tommys funeral that Derek Rodgers was interviewed by the Connacht Trubine that the move was finally revealed,Derek told the reporter how we had worked for a full 2 weeks on the move, my thanks to Derek.
